NSRI Waterwise Education Program

Having focused on boating last week, this week the NSRI focuses on safety in other forms of recreation on the water and in the sea.

SURFING, WIND SURFING AND PADDLE SKIING
*Keep well away from bathing areas and swimmers.
* Use the buddy system and never go out on the water alone.
* Take heed of prevailing weather conditions, do not surf or paddle ski in unfavorable conditions.
* It is advisable to wear protective gear such as a wet suit to protect against cold water and the elements. A life jacket is also recommended if you are wind surfing.
* Do not surf, paddle ski or wind surf at night or in poor visibility.
Should you get into trouble, stay with your board to help keep you afloat. It is advisable to carry a pencil flare in case of an emergency.
* Make sure you know your coastline, the prevailing current and wind pattern.
* Wind surfers should carry a towline in case they need to be pulled back to shore.

INFLATABLES / RUBBER DUCKS
* Only launch from the specified launching sites, be mindful of bathers in the vicinity,
* Be careful not to overload the boat as it will become unstable.
* Take extra precautions to keep your motor(s) in top condition - you do not want to be in the surf when an engine malfunctions

SAILING
* Always inform someone when you go out sailing and file a cruise plan.
* You will need to obtain permission if you plan to sail offshore.
* Keeping an eye out for changes in weather which could indicate that you should head back to shore.
* Double check your rigging before setting out.

CANOEING
* Learn how to canoe safely at a club or on a course. Canoeing off a beach takes strength and skill only learnt by practice.
* Never launch a canoe into surf near rocks, swimmers or near a rip tide moving away from the shore.
* If you get caught in the surf, do not let the canoe get broadside to the waves which will probably cause it to capsize.
