York’s New Astro
Parents, teachers, past pupils and learners of York High School descended on The Quarry Fields (opposite York High’s hostel) on Saturday morning for one of the school’s most memorable and momentous occasions - the official opening of the York High, Myra Gregory Astro Turf.
The Astroturf, York High’s Astronomical Dream, is the brainchild of Jimmy Power - or as he’s fondly referred to in the Yorkie community - The Power.
After the completion of The Quarry clubhouse in February 2006, Jimmy had a vision - a vision to see the learners of York - as well as learners from other schools across the world - play hockey on the school’s very own astroturf. "Keep dreaming," exclaimed Jimmy on that February day. "Or just watch this space!"
Two years later this is no longer a dream, but a reality that has truly put York High on the map as a leader in school hockey.
"We are here today because of the vision and foresight of some amazing people," said mr Tony Dingle, principal of York High School at the opening ceremony on Saturday. "I stand in front of you blown away - this really is one of those I better pinch myself moments!"
The name Myra Gregory Astro was chosen by Andrew Gregory - Myra’s son and a very successful local businessman. Andrew saw the value that the astroturf would add to this area - both to York High School and the community - and decided to make a considerable financial investment in the project.
"We are so grateful for the Gregory family’s generosity," adds Dingle. "They have really given us the boost we needed to go ahead with this project. It is an honour to have the Gregory name associated with our astroturf.
"We hope to see many great hockey players - from schools all over South Africa and the world - playing superb hockey on our astroturf."
