Drummie Nationals For Oudtshoorn
More than 2500 drum majorettes from across the country are expected to twirl their maces in Oudtshoorn at the end of June, injecting about R20-million into the local economy.
This will be the first time that the South African Drum Majorette National Championship is held in a rural area.
Andrew Erikson, who made a presentation to the local municipality, said almost 70 per cent of the town‘s accommodation had been booked and teams had booked places to stay in nearby Calitzdorp and De Rust.
The tournament at the De Jager sport stadium starts on June 28 and ends on July 5. Ticket sales for the finals will open at midnight on May 21 for participating teams and on May 28 for supporters and the general public.
Drummies in South Africa is one of the most rapidly growing sports, presently representing 50000 girls between six and 18 years.
The audience attendance is expected to reach 4000 a day.
