The first thing I noticed on entering Boggomsbaai was the amount of pristine fynbos stretching right into the little settlement itself. Low-impact housing is the order of the day, except for the odd nightmare here and there. But my first impression was one of peace and tranquility: a place where time seems to have stopped for the meantime. Thanks to Fred Orban and his team.
Fred’s office, a long thatched-roofed upper room sits atop a line of garages overlooking the bay. Comfortable, worn chairs, the smell of thatch just above me, office bric-a-brac and plenty of smiles put me at ease straight away. Fred, dressed in shorts and barefoot at the time, displayed nothing of a formal business guy, but rather someone at home and happy in what he is doing. The same can be said for the rest of his team. A vision fulfilled!
After the usual short chit-chat and formalities Fred took me on a tour of the Sandpiper cottages and grounds. This would give me a feeling of what it was all about. A most pleasant experience, indeed.
I don’t know about you, but I’m crazy about anything that emphasizes the indigenous or the "earthiness” of our country. And Fred and his team have done just that! Each thatch cottage was a joy to enter. They are fully equipped with en suite bathrooms. From the red clay tiles beneath me to the huge hearth and rafters above, everything spoke of "local”. Even the fridge and stove have been chosen to blend in. For me it was the fireplace that had the most appeal. There’s enough space to "braai”, make "potjie” and have a fire all at the same time.
But what I appreciated the most was the fact that Fred has ensured that the present ambience and state of Boggomsbaai will stay the same for a long time to come. Building regulations and the strict application of nature conservation rules are applied at all times. These apply as well to the beaches and walks along the coast. His quite enthusiasm and dedication is well-noted in the neatness of the cottages and the concern for Nature, however minute.
So folk, if you’re looking for that lost weekend of peace, isolation and intimacy, then this is the place for you. Man! Just think of all that fynbos and long walks. There are many additional luxuries which the interested reader can enquire about. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when you discover what they are.
