Calitzdorp Wine Cellar

Calitzdorp Wine Cellar: Calitzdorp Wine Cellar

Calitzdorp, Western Cape, South Africa

Calitzdorp Wine Cellar was established in 1928 and produced wine for Distell until the late eighties. During the eighties, Sweet Muscadel and Hanepoot were flagship wines and are still amongst our best sellers.

Our first red wines were made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Shiraz, Pinotage, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted in the early nineties.

In the last 13 years, cellar production increased from 2000 tons to 5000 tons. The Cellar has been awarded Champion Cooperative Winery of the Little Karoo twice and performs very well at The SA Young Wine Show as well as the Veritas Competition. Our Hanepoot and Port have been classed SA Champions at the SA Young Wine Show and awarded with the prestigious Etchell (Hanepoot) and (Port) trophies.

The Cellar`s name was changed from Calitzdorp Cooperative Wine Cellar to Calitzdorp Cellar because it is now a company.

Alwyn Burger was born in 1958 in Montagu and grew up on a wine- farm near the town where his grandfather and father farmed. After school Alwyn worked as assistant-winemaker at Oranjerivier Cellars and then went on to study at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. After the successful completion of the three year course, Alwyn and his wife Dalena, a home-economics teacher, started their careers in Calitzdorp in 1990. They have a son who is currently studying at Stellenbosch.

The Cellar`s assistant-winemaker, Abraham Pretoruis, was born on a farm in Groenfontein near Calitzdorp. He was sent to France where he worked and studied for 3 months near Beaune.
