World of Tomorrow Festival 2019

George Municipality is proud to announce the launch of the first “ World of Tomorrow Festival 2019” which will take place at the George Arts Theatre from the 31 July to 2 August 2019.

This initiative will take the message through children - to the homes of George residents - by means of an Industrial Theatre Competition, which will introduce and explore the topic this year of “How do you mitigate climate change with energy efficiency?”

This theatre event was established to help increase public awareness of the importance of energy efficiency and the participating schools will each present a 15 minute drama production. The drama’s will highlight the changes individual residences and schools can make, to become more energy efficient, which in most cases, will assist with curbing the effect of Climate Change – a global topic.

This project has come about as a result of the George Municipal Electrotechnical department participating in the second year of a National Energy Efficiency Demand program, which includes funding provided by the Department of Energy (DOE) for public awareness around climate change and energy efficiency. South Africa is one of the world’s least energy efficient nations, using approximately 40% of Africa’s electricity and we are the 11th highest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Our energy habits have adverse effects on our economy, our environment and our health. Government has reached out to all South Africans through the National Energy Efficiency campaign to encourage all sectors of society to conquer their “energy addictions”.

Portfolio Councillor for Electrotechnical Services, Edmund Bussack welcomed the launch of this project, “Having an energy efficient building is becoming more and more vital to save on costs and to protect our planet. If we can get our children to understand what would make their homes or school buildings more energy efficient through drama which is creative and entertaining, we are teaching them to do their part and to be energy wise,” he said.

Heather Stead, owner of Enable Community Projects , is the former George Arts Theatre manager and drama graduate who has been appointed to visit and provide support to all the schools participating in this festival. Heather has partnered with the Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa to run a similar project for the past three years. Primary Schools and High Schools will compete separately on stage at the George Arts Theatre and our judging panel constituted of energy and drama experts will assess participants on their message, use of recycled materials and use of the dramatic arts.

Prizes will be given out at our Gala Evening to the winning schools, as well as to those students and schools who stand out. Submissions have closed and we currently have six (6) primary schools and four (4) high schools participating. They are Heidedal Primary, St Mary's Primary, Blanco Primary, Hibernia Primary .Kretzenhoop Primary School, McKinlay Reid International School, Thembalethu High, Rundle College and George High.

Tickets will go on sale mid-June for the Primary School Production (31 July 2019) and the High School Drama Production (1 August 2019). Further details will be made available on the festival via the municipal Facebook page, website, app and Twitter account. Limited tickets will be on sale for attendance at the Gala Evening Production on 2 August 2019.

The project is currently looking for sponsorship of prizes in the form of a financial prize or energy efficiency product, and any individual or businesses that would like to contribute is requested to make contact with Heather Stead on heatherstead.mail@gmail.com or 072 369 3304.

George Municipality has concluded media sponsorships with EDEN FM radio station and Group Editors and looks forward to working with them on this exciting project.
