The city of George is cenral to the South African Garden Route and as you go walking down York Street in George (named in honour of the Duke of York, second son of King George III) two doors from the library, you will find House Crowther, one of the last survivors of the stately homes which once flanked York Street. Dr Charles Owen-Snow, who practiced as general and district surgeon from 1895 to 1940, lived in this distinguished home with his family. Medical instruments used by him are on display in the museum.
York Street has over years become a major attraction in George. The street is today a busy street, central to the business hub of the Garden Route. York Street is one of the longer streets in George and essentially links the main N2 highway, (highway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth) to the George central businbess district. The popular street offers good business exposure and real estate in York Street is therefore considered high value. Popular restaurants and businesses line the wide street, as well as corporates offices, from major banks to insurance companies and main municipal buildings, including the renowned George Museum, which is at the top of York Street.
